Byomkesh Bakshi-The Thorn In The Way (EP1)

Byomkesh carefully folded the newspaper and placed it on one side of the table.  Then he leaned back in his chair and stared out the window.  Outside, the mistless Falgun's sky was glistening in the morning light.  We live in the third floor of the house.  Downstairs, the hustle and bustle of the neo-liberal city has begun, and there is no end to the hustle and bustle of the cycle-car-tram on Harrison Road.  This movement is also reflected in the sky to some extent.  The birds are fluttering in the sky, chirping unnecessarily;  Far above them, a flock of pigeons throws the city of Calcutta down, as if rising from the sky in the hope of orbiting the sun.
At about eight o'clock in the morning, after breakfast and breakfast, the two of us were lazily receiving messages from the outside world from the pages of the newspaper.  Byomkesh looked away from the window and said, "Have you noticed a funny advertisement in the paper for some time now?"
I said: “No.  I don't read advertisements. ”  Byomkesh raised her eyebrows and said a little surprised: “Don't read the advertisement?  Then what read on? ”
"Everyone reads what they read in the newspaper - the news."
"You mean, in Manchuria, someone's finger was cut off and there was bloodshed, and in Brazil, who had three sons together, read this!"  What is the benefit of reading all this?  If you want to get real authentic news, then read the advertisement. ”
Byomkesh is a strange person, but his identity will gradually be revealed.  Seeing or hearing him from the outside, it never seems that there is something extraordinary in him.  But if you can poke him, protest his words, make him a little excited, the man inside will come out like a tortoise.  He was naturally short-spoken, but once he was able to sneer at her with sarcasm, his sharpened intellect, like a knife, came out of the veil of restraint and restraint, then his speech really became something to be heard.
I could not control the stinging lava, I said: "Oh, isn't it?  But the newsmen are the devil, not filling all the papers with advertisements and ruining the pages by printing some bad news. ”
Byomkesh's eyes became sharp.  He said: "It is not their fault.  If they can't convince peoples like you, the paper is not sold and the newsmen become poor, so you are forced to create all those news.  There is a real news but in advertisements.  - Who is robbing day and night, who is hatching new tricks to smuggle goods - - If you want to get these useful news, you have to read the advertisement.  These are not available in Reuter's Telegram.  ”
I laughed and said, "Actually, you are right, whatever."  I will read the advertisement from now on. But let me your funny ad?  Byomkesh turned the paperwork towards me and said, "Read it, I have stained it." Turning the page, I saw a tiny three-line advertisement in one corner.  "Thorns of the road"
"If anyone wants to get out of the way, at 5:30 pm on Saturday, stand by the lamppost in the southwest corner of the Whiteway Ledell store."
Even after reading it two or three times, I could not understand the head of the advertisement. I was surprised and asked,   "If you put your hand on the lamppost and stand on, the thorn in the path will be removed!"  What does this ad mean?  And the thorns of the path- what's this?   Byomkesh said: "I have not discovered it yet.  The advertisement has been running for three months for a fee on Fridays. I said:
"But what is the success of this advertisement?"  Does he advertise with any purpose?  It does not mean anything.  Byomkesh said:
"There is no purpose in sight at the moment, but it cannot be said that there is no purpose.  anyone don't waste his money without any reason.  One thing comes to mind when you read the text.  "The person who has advertised is trying to hide himself.  First of all, there is no name in the advertisement.  Many times the name is not in the advertisement, but if you search in the office of the newspaper, you can know all the names.  Box numbers are given in such advertisements.  It does not.  Then you see, the person who advertises wants to run a business with the public - this is no exception.  But the funny thing is, this person wants to run its own business from invisibility.  "I do not understand".  "Well, I'm explaining."  The person who is giving this advertisement is calling the public and saying: "Oh, if you want to remove the thorn in the side of the road, then stand in such and such place at such and such a time - stand in such a way that I can recognize you."  , But suppose you want that thing.  What is your duty?  Go to the designated place and stand holding the lamppost.  Suppose you go and stand there in time.  What happened then?  "What happened?"  "You don't have to tell what kind of crowd takes place in that place at 5:30 on Saturday."  Whiteway Ladle on the other side, New Market on the other side, and five-six cinema houses around.  You stood for half an hour holding a lamppost, but it didn't turn out as you had hoped - no one came up with the medicine to save the thorns in your path. When you get bored and leave, you think, it's all a hoax.  Then suddenly he saw with his hand in his pocket, who had left a letter in the crowd in your pocket.  “Then?  "Then what else?"  The thief-blacksmith was not seen but the burglary was arranged to be made.  Your relationship with the advertiser is established but you don't know who he is or what he looks like.  I was silent for a while and said: "If your argument can be accepted as true, then what is the proof?"  "This proves that the thorny trader of the path wants to keep himself very secretive and he who is so narrow-minded to introduce himself can be humble, but never a saint."
I shook my head and said: “This is just your guess, you can't call it proof.
Byomkesh got up and walked around the house and said:
"Hey, guess is the real proof.  Analyzing, what they call direct evidence, some have nothing but conjecture.  What is the circumstantial evidence in the law?  Nothing more than guesswork. But because of his loudness, how many lives are going away". I remained silent, unable to give my heart.  The assumption that it can be equivalent to direct evidence is not easy to accept.  But it is difficult to refute Byomkesh's argument.  So I considered it better to remain silent.  I knew that he would become even more intolerant of this silence and would soon come up with a convincing argument.  A bird of prey came and sat on the window sill and turned its head to observe us with its bright little eyes.  Byomkesh suddenly stood up and pointed her finger and said:
“Well, can you tell me what that bird wants?  "What do you want?"
"Oh, maybe looking for a place to build a nest.  Right?"
 "No doubt?
"No doubt."  Putting his hands behind his back, Byomkesh said softly,
"How do you understand?  What is the proof "?
"What more proof!  A small twig in his mouth: the twig is proof that he wants to build a nest?" I saw that I had fallen into Byomkesh's trick.  I said,
 "No - but -"
"yes, it's guess.  Come to the point".
"But do you mean to say that the same assumptions that are made about birds will also apply to humans?"
"Why not?"  "If you sit at someone's window with a twig in your mouth, what will be the proof that you want to build a house?"
"No."  Then it will prove that I am a closed lunatic.  Does it need proof?  ”Byomkesh started laughing.  He said: “You can't avoid.  But the point must be made - the direct evidence may be rather unbelievable, but the reasonable guess is absolutely absurd. He doesn't have to be wrong.  I was stubborn too, I said:
"But I can't believe all the bizarre assumptions you made about that ad."  Byomkesh said: “He wants the weakness of your mind, the power to believe.  Which, of course, I will make you believe.  Tomorrow is Saturday, no work in the afternoon.  Tomorrow will make you believe.
 "How?"
We heard footsteps on the stairs.  Byomkesh got up and said, "Stranger - old man - fat, would not be an exaggeration - he has a stick in his hand - who is this?"  Surely he want to meet us, because there is no one else but us.  He pressed his face and smiled.   The knock on the outer door shook.  Byomkesh called out and said, “Come in - the door is open.
Pushing the door, a middle-aged obese gentleman entered.  He had in his hand a stick of silver wicker, a black short-sleeved coat, and a dhoti.  Fair-skinned, with a beard and mustache on his face, the front of her head is bald and clean. Upstairs to the third floor and gasped, so he enter the room and could not speak at first.  He took a handkerchief from his pocket and started wiping his face.  Byomkesh listened to me softly and said: “Guesswork!  Guesswork!  I silently overcome his sarcasm.  Because, in this case, there is no doubt that his assumptions about the appearance of the newcomer have matched his letters.  The gentleman took a deep breath and asked:   "Whose name is Detective Byomkeshbabu"?
Byomkesh switched on the fan on his head, pointed to a chair and said, "Sit down. My name is Byomkesh Bakshi, but I don't like that detective;  I am a truth seeker.  It seems that probably you are in a problem. Cool down a bit, then listen to the secret of your gramophone pin".
The gentleman sat down in the chair and stared at Byomkesh's face.  I was also surprised and looked at his face...
