Thorn In The Way(Episode 2)

The gentleman sat down in the chair and stared at Byomkesh's face. I was also got surprised. Just seeing this old gentleman and how it was possible to associate him with the gramophone-pin mystery did not enter my mind at all. I have seen many examples of Byomkesh's strange powers, but it seems to be a hoax. The gentleman said with great difficulty,
"You - how do you know?"
 Byomkesh said with a laugh:
"It's just a guess. Firstly, you are old, secondly, you are compatible, thirdly, you are in great danger recently and lastly - want to take my help".
So, leaving the word incomplete, Byomkesh shook hands and explained that it would be easy for a child to find out the reason for his arrival after this. It is worth mentioning here that the strange and mysterious thing that has been going on in the city of Calcutta for some time now and which has been called by the Gramophone pin Mystery, has caused a great deal of controversy in the local and English newspapers of the city;  As a result, the people of Calcutta have much curiosity, excitement and panic in their minds about this topic. After reading the thriller and scary story in newspaper, the rumor of the tea shop was rife with excitement and before leaving the house, every Bengali householder started getting panic and fear and thinking that the incident can happen also with them. The matter is this - about a month and a half ago, an elderly gentleman named Joyhari Sanyal, a resident of Sukiya Street, was walking down Cornwallis Street in the morning.  As he was about to cross the road and go to another sidewalk, he suddenly fell face down. There was no shortage of people on the streets in the morning, everyone grabbed him and picked him up and saw that there was no life in his body. When he went to find out what had happened to him, he noticed that there was a drop of blood on his chest - and there were no signs of injuries anywhere.  Police sent his body to hospital on suspicion of untimely death. There the doctor gave a strange report on the postmortem examination. The cause of death, he wrote, is a gramophone pin rule in the heart. Explaining how the pin entered the heart, the specialist orthopedic surgeon wrote that the pin, thrown by a gun or similar device, pierced the skin and flesh of the chest from the front of the corpse and entered the heart, and death occurred almost immediately. There was a lot of movement in the press about this incident and a short biography of the deceased was also published. Many studies have been published on whether it was a homicide and if so, how it happened.  But no one could say for sure - what is the purpose of this murder and what is the interest of the person who committed the murder! The fact that the government police have taken charge of the investigation was also revealed in the paper. The qazis of the tea shop said that it was nothing but lactar heartfelt, but due to the famine of the good news present, the paper makers have come up with this new trick and made for extra sell. The polite Bengali community of Calcutta stood up in excitement at the news that came out in all the newspapers of the city at the rate of one and a half inches.  The third eye of the so - called pandits of the tea meeting widened at once and opened.  So many rumors, speculations and rumors were born that not ever made. ”Daily Kalketu wrote,

“ Gramophone pin again is an unprecedented thrilling mystery.  Calcutta's roads are not safe"

"Readers of Kalketu know that a few days ago, Jayahari sanyal fell down and died on the way. A gramophone pin came out of his heart during the examination and the doctor pointed out that it was the cause of death. We suspected then that this was not a normal thing, that there was a great conspiracy hidden inside.  That suspicion of ours has come true, something similar has happened yesterday. Kailash Chandra, a well-known wealthy businessman from Calcutta, rode on his car at about five-thirty in the afternoon and went for a walk in the middle of the field. Going to the Red Road, he stopped the car and got out of the car to go for a walk, and immediately fell to the ground with a ‘Uh’ sound. His manager and other persons on the street quickly picked him up again, but he was no longer alive. Everyone was stunned by the accident, but fortunately the police arrived shortly after.  Kailashbabu was wearing a silk Punjabi, and the police, seeing a drop of blood on his chest, immediately rushed his body to Hospital on suspicion of accidental death. The autopsy doctor's report revealed that a gramophone pin was stuck in Kailasababu's heart, which had been thrown from in front of him and entered the heart. "It is clear that this is not an accident, but a gang of homicides has emerged in the city of Calcutta. It is difficult to guess who they are and for what purpose they have started killing prominent people in the city. The most surprising thing is that the method of killing them is covered with a deep mystery as to where and with what weapon they are killing. Kailashbabu was a very kind-hearted and kind person, it does not seem possible for anyone to have enmity with him.  He was only forty-eight years of age at the time of his death. Kailashbabu was married and childless. His only daughter inherited his property. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved daughter and son-in-law of Kailashbabu. The police are conducting a thorough investigation. It is clear that Kailashbabu's manager Kali Singh has been arrested on suspicion".
Then for two weeks there was a great uproar in the newspapers. The police rushed to the spot and got into a frenzy. But far from being caught, the frozen mystery of the gramophone pin - the ray of light in the darkness - was not seen.  Fifteen days later, the gramophone pin appeared again. This time his victim was Krishnadayal Laha, a rich moneylender of the Subarbarnik community. After crossing the intersection of Dharmatala and Wellington Street, he fell and did not get up. The huge outcry that started in the newspapers is beyond description. Editorial comments about the incompetence of the police also became sharp and cruel. A horror like the fear of ghosts sat on the chests of the people of Calcutta. In the living room, tea shop, restaurant and drawing room, all other discussions stopped. Then two more similar murders took place in quick succession. The city of Calcutta was lying helplessly like a paralyzed man, wondering what to do in this unimaginable calamity, how to defend himself, nothing. Need less to say, Byomkesh was deeply attracted to this. Catching thieves is his profession and he has made quite a name for himself in this work. As much as he disliked the word detective, he knew in his heart that he was nothing but a non-government detective.  So this fancy murder aroused all his mental strength. In the meantime, the two of us had visited different places together.  I don't know if Byomkesh gained any new knowledge as a result;  He did not tell me anything. But wherever he got the news about the gramophone PIN, he carefully kept it in his notebook. I hoped that in his mind one day a piece of this mystery would fall into his hands. So today, when the truth came into his hands, I saw that even though he had a calm restraint on the outside, he was very excited and anxious on the inside.  The gentleman said:
“I heard your name, I saw that I was not cheated. I am confident that you will be able to save me. Nothing will happen by the police, I didn't go to them, man. Don't look, there were five murders in the daytime - five in the afternoon, what if the police could do something? I almost went to it and a little! His voice stopped trembling, a sweat appeared on his forehead. Byomkesh said in a consoling voice: “You will not be disturbed. You did well to come to me without going to the police. If anyone can do anything about it, he is absolutely not a policeman. Tell me everything from top to bottom, don't say anything useless".  The gentleman took some control and began to say:
"My name is Sri Ashutosh Mitra, I live in Nebutala nearby.  From the age of eighteen, I have spent my whole life wandering around on the occasion of business - never getting a chance to get married. Other than that, I didn't love Navy-Gandhi as a child, so I never wanted to get married. I like to live alone. The age is not less -in the coming Magh, I will be fifty one years old.  I have retired from working in halls for almost two years, my life's earnings are deposited in the bank. I lost a lot of interest. I don't even have to pay rent, the house is my own. I have a little hobby of singing, so I was spending a lot of time with it".  Byomkesh asked: "Of course there is someone behind?" Ashubabu shook his head and said: "No. There is no one big to say relatives, so he does not have to make a fuss. There is only one useless nephew, he used to come to harass me sometimes for money. He is absolutely drunk and gambler, I can't stand that kind of person, man, so I don't let him enter the house anymore.  Byomkesh asked:
"Where does the nephew live?"  Ashubabu said with a little satisfaction:
"For the time being.  He was jailed for two months for getting drunk on the street and fighting with police".Then go on saying.  "Binod, my useless nephew, I was quite comfortable for a few days after he going to jail. I have no friends, but I have never knowingly harmed anyone;  So I can't even think of the enemy I have.  But suddenly there was like a thunderstorm.  The thing that can happen is beyond my imagination. I read about the gramophone pin mystery in the paper, but I couldn't believe it, I thought it was all fake. But that mistake broke me. Yesterday evening I went out for a walk as usual. There is a concert at Jorasanko, where I spend my every evening and return home at around 9:00 - 9:30. I travel on foot, at my age, if I walk regularly, my body stays good.  I was returning home last night, at exactly eight-thirty, on the crossroads of Amherst Street and Harrison Road. The road was still very crowded with cars.  I stood on the sidewalk for a while, passing two trams.  Seeing a little gap, I went to cross the crossroads. When I reached the middle of the road, there was a sudden push in my chest, I felt a pain like a thorn drop on the skin of my chest, I felt as if someone had punched a huge watch on my chest-pocket watch.  I was about to fall over, but somehow I managed to save myself and climb on the front sidewalk. I feel a Dizziness in my head. I could not imagine how it hit my chest.  When I went to take the watch out of my pocket, I saw that the watch was not being taken out, it was stuck on there. When I carefully removed the pocket cloth and pulled out the watch, I saw that his glass case had been smashed - and - and a gramophone pin had thrown the watch out of it's front side...”
